wordpress.commercial

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2005

Ive been having bad thoughts about the people behind wordpress for some time now. Now it seems my fears of them getting out of the closet as the next “oh please google/yahoo buy us” company. They’re are just another group of, lets get rich quick and fuck over our user base, idiots.
Within the last few day the launched wordpress.com. Very similar to Bloggers blogspot, you’ll have your blog hosted at a *.wordpress.com domain. So what does this have to do with yahoo and google? Registred users! thats whats its all about. Like Flickr, yahoo didnt just buy Flickr because of the nice service they’ve developed, they also did it because of the registred users.

So why wont wordpress.com succeed in this plan? Well Google have blogger, and yahoo thinks they have a blogging service in their yahoo360 just like MS msn blogging thingie which I wont even talk about because itsuglyretardednotworthyofthisplanet.

I really hope that im not right about this, but im afraid theres evidence that they are all a bunch of money loving savages.

Somebody at the Wordpress site is insane

Thursday, November 17th, 2005

Take a look at the front page of the wordpress site. Did you see the little snip of text at the bottom about supporting/advertising on the site. I got curious and clicked the link.
They want $100.000 for one week of adverticing! With only 10.000 unique visitors per day. Average cost per click is $74.80.
I really doubt anyone in the right mind would pay that.

Portable Firefox

Monday, November 7th, 2005

It was bound to happen. Now you can get Firefox as portable software for your USB key. Its easy to use. You can easily copy your local Firefox setting to your portable version. You can post to your Wordpress install (This is a post from portable Firefox)
I actually think you can do exactly what you do with your local Firefox, allthough there are some known issues.

Remember to practise Safe Portable App-ing

Portable software

Friday, November 4th, 2005

Ever since I bought my first USB key, I wondered why anyone didnt make any programs to run directly from them. While I wondered, people actually did make programs for them, and I just simply forgot about my idea.
A few months back I discovered the first program, Foxit a small nifty pdf reader, which has been sitting on my USB key ever since.
I cant remember how, but someway I was directed to a page on Metafilter, where a guy asked for these kind of programs. It was walking thrugh a goldmine reading the answers.
As suggested in the answers from Metafilter, these sites are good resources for USB ker programs: The portable freeware collection and Tinyapps.org

How to backup your DVDs

Wednesday, October 26th, 2005

While surfing around del.icio.us/popular today I discovered this site on how to backup your DVDs on a Mac.
It features a nice little presentation video of the programs and their usage.
Now my problem is that I dont use Macs. So what to do but do a little; How to backup your DVDs when you’re a Gates supporter (yuck).

So here goes:
1. You’ll need a DVD ripping program - For this little tutorial I use DVDshrink (I am aware that theres tons of other program and ways to do this, that produces better outputs, but this is meant as a easy and fast tutorial)
2. Download DVD shrink
3. Install DVD shrink (If you dont know how to install a program, then please carefully step away from your computer)
4. Start DVD shrink and insert the DVD you want to backup in your PCs DVD drive.
5. Press the “Open Disc” icon - DVD shrink now makes a preview. That takes roughly 1 minute.

6. Desellect the features on the disc you dont need. You know as a Dane I really dont need those other subtitles or Chinese audiotracks.

7. Press the “Backup” icon and then in the new window “OK” Sit back and relax or order some flowers for your wife. You know the time you’ll spend sitting on your ass backing up DVDs will most likely make her somewhat grumpy - hence you’ll need the flowers to soften the situation.

8. After the ripping is done, simply insert a blank DVD into your DVD burner. Sit back and relax, take a visit to ebay or amazon and see if you can find some jewelry for your woman, believe me you’ll need it.
9. DVD tray pops open, and there you have your backup.

Comment Spam 2

Wednesday, October 19th, 2005

A little while ago my blog started to receive comment spam. In something less than 2 months the spam has gone from 1 or 2 per week, to 22 the last 26 hours. If it wasnt for Spam Karma 2, soon all my time would be spend deleting spam comments.

How to get more visitors to your blog

Thursday, October 6th, 2005

Ive been blogging since early 2000. Ive started out with blogger using the free webspace provided by my ISP. At that time all I cared about was writing and figure out how I could use this new media. In the process I learned some basic html, first by copy and paste, and later the tags just kinda clued to my brain (Not very well though).
Ive been all over the bloguniverse with my writing style: VERY personal to just dumping links faster than I could hit that BlogThis button. Besides learning some html, I also improved my english. Reading this you wouldnt believe it could have been worse, but it was bad, very bad.
After almost 5 years with blogger I moved to Wordpress. A whole new universe, so to speak. A better system with more possibilities. It didnt improve my writing, but I did learn how to set up a mysql database, and started my interest inCSS (Which I still need to learn more about.)

The downside on Wordpress was that now I needed not only to pay my ISP but also for hosting. Not the biggest bill in the world, but it did make me set a new goal for my blogging, besides just enjoying it like I always has. I wanted to make the site pay for it self. Adsense was the first thing I added and thought was a good way to make the back.
The problem was that my blog didnt get enough visitors and clickthroughs. So after a few months I also added Adbrite, not to any help. So far in over a year with Adsense and Adbrite Ive “earned” 17 dollars. The only problem is that Adsense doesnt send a check before you’ve earned atleast $100 and Adbrite $20.

So I figured I better start adding my blog to all the blogsearchengines that popped up all over in the last couple of years. Finally something happened. I started to get less visitors. Thats correct, from something around 150 visitors per day, im now at something like 50.

So now I bet you sit in your chair thinking, WTF he wrote something about how to get more visitors.
But I actually think I got the answer. Hold on while I get another cup of coffee. There, ok, ready?
You have to write, not promote. You have to write about things that are interesting to you, not what you think others want to read about. You need to care, not to do it for the money. And the last one: Never forget that this is not only a media for knowledge, many people use it for entertainment.

I actually got some pretty good examples to why this is true.

Feel free to call me a total idiot, or share knowledge on this subject.

Comment Spam

Monday, September 19th, 2005

Looks like my little site here, has been caught in the comment spammers net.
Gonna try out some comment filtering plugins, so expect some odd behaviour from the site, as Im the greatest tech fuckup ever born.

Update: Spam Karma 2.0 just been installed. Seems like a well written plugin. And again, im a tech idiot, so expect fuckups.

Another Update: While surfing for a spam killer plugin, I accidently fell over the 3 Column Relaxation theme. This is simply the theme I wished I had the talent to make.

Look at the Google ads

Thursday, September 8th, 2005

Look at the Google ad box to the right. The last couple of days it has only shown one link, and a very important one.
The reason I havnt touched this site for some days now, is exactly the same reason the donation ad is there. Theres nothing that really seems important these days, that being posting photos, movie rants or whatever.
I think im gonna take another small break from the site.

Google talk

Friday, August 26th, 2005

Yet another big internet firm has released a messenger program. This time it was Google who decided to launch a messenger. Not very surprising, what surprised some people is the fact that it isnt web-based, but a “real” program.
Download squad [via kottke] has a small review and some screenshots on their site.

You can download the messenger here.

So what does this give us users? Besides a clean looking messenger, without all the clutter and rubbish MS and Yahoo has filled their clients with. In my eyes, not much. Actually it only ads to the bundle of messengers, we have sitting in the tray taking up memory. Maybe thats the price us, the users, have to pay to be able to communicate with each other.
Ive jumped of that wagon some time ago and just installed Miranda, and added all my accounts in this great little messenger.

The greatest news to me is that Miranda have been quick and added support for Google talk.

My Googletalk username is: daysleeper. Feel free to send/ping me a msg, if you wanna know if your client works.
